genus Acnodon

(Jégu & Santos, 1990)

Genus Acnodon forms the sister group to the other two clade. The genera Myleus, Mylesinus, and N. gen. A form and group which receives good support from the molecular data. They are commonly called sheep-pacus. The breast is flat and not serrated; other peculiarities are the very long predorsal spine as well as the aquiline "nose" of the type-species, Acnodon oligacanthus.

Acnodon senai N. sp., described of Rio Jari (Brazil, Amapa), is a species close to A. normani Gosline, 1951 described of Rio Tocantins. These two species have a pointed muzzle, a final mouth and two series of definitely separate teeth of the prémaxillaire. These characters differentiate them from A. oligacanthus (Müller and Troschel, 1844), described of Surinam, at which the muzzle is round, the mouth infère and the coupled series prémaxillaires. The branchiospines, rigid and bordered of a simple membrane at A. normani, flexible and are bordered of a membrane lobulée at A. senai.
