P. nattereri Head, showing mouth/teeth and eye socket, the lower mandible jaw structure showing the triangular teeth. Even with small specimens as this one, the teeth are well-formed.

The magnification of the caudal fin shows the structure of the branched rays, including its segments. Juvenile piranhas bite each other quite frequently and it is almost impossible to find a specimen without a multitude of bite marks on the tail or body.

The pre-dorsal spine (small spine seen in front of) is followed by the branched dorsal fin. This spine is characteristic of all piranhas.

The pre-anal spine is found just before the start of the anal fin. Not all piranhas have this spine.

The scutes (or serrae) that run the length of the belly is the basis for the Latin name of Serrasalmus = serrated salmons. The serrae can be seen at the bottom of image highlighted by the oval air bubble.
