Ossubtus xinguense, a new genus and species from the Rio Xingu, Amazonia, Brazil (Teleostei: Serrasalmidae). Ossubtus xinguense, a new genus and species, differs from the other species of the Serrasalmidae in the strictly ventral position of the mouth and in having only four teeth on the dentary. Ossubtus xinguense is also characterised by the lack of prepelvic serrae, the contact of the two series of premaxillary teeth, the possession of delicate incisiform teeth on the jaws, and a triangular black humeral blotch in juveniles. The form of the two posterior outer premaxillary teeth, either incisiform, tricuspidate and flat, and the large olfactory fossa are synapomorphies shared by Mylesinus and Ossubtus.
